El otro día me entrevistaron en televisión. Me preguntaron sobre como fotografíaba personas. Querían que hablara de que hace que una personas ofrezca su mejor versión en una sesión de fotos. Entre todas las preguntas me hicieron la que esta de moda ¿Cómo la inteligencia artificial puede ayudar a la fotografía? En mi experiencia «limpiando el estudio cuando terminas el trabajo».

Quiero pensar que como todas las cosas que se ponen de moda esta pasará. Pero temo que no. Ya deberíamos saber que parar la tecnología es muy difícil. Desde el punto de vista publicitario, por ejemplo, no tengo ninguna duda de que los fotógrafos seremos rápidamente sustituidos. Si los resultados que la inteligencia artificial nos ofrece nos parecen suficientes ¿qué sentido tiene pedir más? No es nada nuevo, llevamos años bajo el influjo de la inteligencia artificial y su capacidad para manipular nuestra percepción hasta niveles de homogeneización no vistos antes. De hecho, si nos paramos a pensar la fotografía, su mero nacimiento ha sido gracias a la tecnología.

No será necesario un autor. Simplemente la increíble capacidad de procesamiento de la máquina, la interconexión con nuestros datos necesariamente regalados y la copia de lo existente será la base de las nuevas imágenes y de otras cosas menos frívolas. En ellas, será la máquina la que tome las decisiones y no será necesario más que un técnico, quizá humano, que la supervise y algo de electricidad. En poco tiempo podrán darnos de comer lo que quieran y no habrá una opción B. Los autores volverán a la vida del renacimiento. Sólo los mejores podrán ser pobres.

Para mi es una idea inquietante. Es una tecnología basada descaradamente en la manipulación. Tomo lo que hay a mi alrededor y lo modifico según mis criterios para devolver una historia creíble que consiga mis fines. Vamos, lo mismo que hacemos los humanos. O no. 

El caso es que tendremos a algo que nos parecerá cada vez más natural. Los humanos tenemos gran capacidad de adaptación, o tragaderas, según se mire. Nuestro nuevo amigo nos conocerá cada vez mejor y cada vez nos sentiremos más próximos gracias a la empatía. Valoraremos no sólo su utilidad, sino también la oportunidad con la que cubre nuestras necesidades que curiosamente no teníamos. Este amigo nuestro no sólo es oportuno, sino que es brillante y ha transformado nuestra vida en algo más cómodo, donde el esfuerzo no es mas que una molestia olvidada. Todo tremendamente conveniente. Gracias a él podemos centrarnos en lo verdaderamente importante, una vida con propósito, relevante y carente de aburrimiento. Por fin seremos libres de las ataduras de la vida y aspiraremos a algo superior que al fin y al cabo es para lo que se creo la inteligencia humana.

Nuestro nuevo amigo no necesita escrúpulos, tan sólo una clara normativa. También deberá ser independiente para molestar lo mínimo. Si exceptuamos las redes sociales no tendría gracia tener que ocuparme yo de el/ella y consumir mi tiempo. No debe conectar con nadie mas que con su dueño para servirle. Un Hall moderno. Queremos maquinas que nos den resultados abrumadores.

La Inteligencia artificial será esa que nos abra los ojos a un mundo de posibilidades hasta ahora ni siquiera imaginables. No vemos ningún peligro. Para mi hay un hecho sorprendente que tenemos en el mismo origen. DeepBlue sorprendió al mundo al vencer a Kasparov. Lo consiguió cuando cometió un error. Gracias al error venció. Menos mal que era una partida de ajedrez y no una sentencia judicial, una operación de corazón o estaba a solas con un niño.

Soy fotógrafo y hablo de imágenes. Estas están presentes en nuestra vida constantemente. Percibimos y comunicamos con ellas constantemente y gran parte de la historia del arte esta basada en la búsqueda de la belleza, de la proporción y de la emotividad. Hemos sido atraídos generación tras generación por algo que sentimos superior a nosotros, que nos conecta con el resto y nos hace humanos. Me fascina como hemos podido crear maquinas que pueden conseguir resultados tan realistas a través del algebra y el cálculo, y manipularla para ser aparente. Esta creación nos observa, revisa nuestra historia, copia los comportamientos y gestos y emociones. Nos promete una nueva realidad llena de sentido por que la que tenemos se queda corta….¡Anda! Como un sociópata.

The other day, I was interviewed on television. They asked me how I photograph people and wanted me to talk about what makes someone show their best side during a photo session. Among all the questions, they asked the one that’s trending: «How can artificial intelligence help photography?» In my experience, AI is only useful for «cleaning up the studio when you’re done.»

I’d like to think that, like all trends, this one will pass. But I fear it won’t. We should already know that stopping technology is incredibly difficult. From an advertising perspective, for example, I have no doubt that photographers will be swiftly replaced. If the results provided by artificial intelligence seem sufficient, why ask for more? This is nothing new— for years, we’ve been under the influence of AI and its ability to manipulate our perception to levels of uniformity never seen before. In fact, if we reflect on photography, its very existence is thanks to technology.

There won’t be a need for an author anymore. The machine’s incredible processing power, its access to our freely given data, and its ability to copy the existing world will form the basis of new images and even more significant things. In this process, the machine will make the decisions, requiring only a human technician to oversee it and some electricity. Soon, they’ll be able to feed us whatever they want, and there won’t be a Plan B. Artists will return to the Renaissance lifestyle: only the best will be poor.

For me, it’s a disturbing idea. This technology is blatantly based on manipulation. It takes what’s around me, alters it according to its own criteria, and returns a believable story that serves its purpose. Pretty much what we humans do. Or maybe not.

The point is, we’ll have something that will start to seem more and more natural. Humans are highly adaptable—or incredibly gullible, depending on how you look at it. Our new friend will know us better over time, and we’ll feel closer to it thanks to empathy. We’ll not only value its usefulness but also the convenience with which it fulfills needs we didn’t even know we had. This friend of ours is not only useful; it’s brilliant and has transformed our lives into something more comfortable, where effort is nothing but a forgotten nuisance. Everything is remarkably convenient. Thanks to it, we can focus on what truly matters— a life with purpose, relevance, and free from boredom. At last, we’ll be free from life’s burdens, aiming for something higher, which was the reason human intelligence was created in the first place.

Our new friend won’t need scruples, just a clear set of rules. It should also be independent to bother us as little as possible. Except for social media, it would be annoying if we had to manage it ourselves and waste our time. It shouldn’t connect with anyone other than its owner to serve them—a modern HAL. We want machines that deliver overwhelming results.

Artificial intelligence will open our eyes to a world of possibilities we couldn’t have imagined. We see no danger in that. But to me, there’s one remarkable fact that goes back to the beginning. Deep Blue shocked the world by defeating Kasparov. It succeeded when it made a mistake. The error won it the game. Thankfully, it was just a chess match and not a court ruling, heart surgery, or a situation involving a child alone.

I’m a photographer, and I talk about images. They are a constant presence in our lives. We perceive and communicate through them every day, and much of art history is based on the pursuit of beauty, proportion, and emotion. We’ve been drawn, generation after generation, to something we feel is greater than ourselves, something that connects us and makes us human. I’m fascinated by how we’ve created machines capable of producing such realistic results through algebra and calculation, and how we can manipulate that to appear authentic. This creation watches us, reviews our history, mimics behaviors, gestures, and emotions. It promises us a new reality, full of meaning, because the one we have isn’t enough. Funny, it’s like a sociopath.
